Residence Halls and Dormitories
California State University
Bakersfield, CA
This project was conceived as a means of facilitating the integration of the resident
and commuter segments of the student body. Relatively small (40 room) buildings have
single and double rooms mixed with lounge and study areas. Each three-story
residential house is linked to a one-story lounge, locker, and study building which
is open to both residents and commuters. The six buildings are sited at varying
heights, creating a “village” effect. Supporting the residential village is a
Dining Commons containing a snack bar, dining hall, and large recreation, meeting
rooms, central kitchen, and Resident Advisor’s quarters. The “village” is sited
around water elements with generous landscaping and meandering paths for pedestrian
and cyclist.
