Downtown Center, Bakersfield College
Kern Community College District
Bakersfield, CA
The Kern Community College District was in need of a new facility in the central city
area of Bakersfield. Their initial studies indicated it was not feasible to remodel
an existing structure due to cost and aesthetics, and a new facility was simply beyond
their budget. Our studies, however, suggested that we could indeed remodel an
existing structure into a facility they would be proud of and that would be within
their very tight budget.
BFGC completely transformed the exterior by applying a new organic-rusting steel and
brick veneer facelift, cutting large window openings to bring natural lighting into
the interior, planting rows of street trees along the two public sidewalks, closing
the street between building and parking lot (we approached the city to fund a
beautification project where a sea of asphalt has existed), and planting a series of
parking lot tress, lawn and benches to soften the urban environment.
The project was purchased and remodeled for an incredible $28.78/s.f. It won a
national design award for creative recycling of a “throw-away” building.
